Collaborative Leadership Works

Collaborative leadership looks like leading together. Everyone contributes. Everyone shares ideas. Everyone takes part in decisions. In public health and early childhood work, this means funders, staff, partners, and families all have a voice. We work as a team to make things easier for young children and their families. We listen first, then act. We remember that we can do more together than we can alone.

Strong collaborative leaders put children and families first. We listen to families of small children and the organizations that serve families to learn what is (and what isn't) going well. We make it easy for people to contribute ideas and share concerns. We respect the wisdom of lived experience and community knowledge. Collaborative leaders include many voices, especially people from different cultures, jobs, and backgrounds. They ask who is missing from the group and make space for new people and new ideas.

Collaborative leaders share leadership. Here are tips for success:

• Ask different people to lead meetings, projects, and events.

• Share power and make decisions in fair and open ways.

• Build partnerships with schools, health providers, and community groups.

• Share helpful information and connect people to resources and to each other.

• Grow trust through regular conversation and honest teamwork.

Families are at the center of our work.

Collaborative leaders keep learning and improving. They stop to ask what is working and what needs to change. They ask for feedback and try new ideas. They stay respectful and kind, even when people disagree or when the answer is not clear yet. They look at the big picture and choose what is best for the whole community. The goal is shared leadership, strong partnerships, and better results for children and families.
